It was a dejected group of Irish players that trudged through the mixed zone after last night's crushing 6-1 defeat to Germany at the Aviva Stadium.

The worst competitive home defeat in Irish international football history had sapped confidence and left many feeling humiliated.

They were aware how good the opposition were before the game, but the manner and scale of the defeat had caused major embarrassment.

"We knew we were up against a tough team. As professional footballers it's not good enough to get beaten 6-1," said defender Seamus Coleman, who made his long overdue competitive debut.

"They are a great team but it's no excuse to lose by that margin. We didn't really put it up to them at all.

"You are trying to win, you're trying to close them down, you're trying your best to get near them, but they've got some top-class players who can open you up.

"I think they scored a couple of goals from outside the box, so credit to them, but it's not good enough from us."

Coleman admitted his delight at getting a starting berth, but that excitement had long since disappeared by the time he spoke to the media.

"Everyone is disappointed but it looks like Germany will win the group so we've got to go to the Faroe Islands," he said turning his attention to Tuesday's qualifier in Tórshavn.

"We've got to forget about that game as soon as possible. It's going to be a hard couple of days. We have to win that game.

"No professional sports person could be happy with that but we have to … put that behind us."

It was a particularly difficult night for Coleman's defensive colleague Darren O'Dea, who was at fault for a number of the goals, including the foul on Miroslav Klose that allowed Mesut Ozil to score the third goal from the penalty spot.

Understandably, O'Dea was not too keen to dwell on the performance and was looking ahead to Tuesday's qualifier.

"To concede six goals in a game is embarrassing," admitted the Toronto FC defender.

"We have to try and be positive about it and say that it is just three points lost. We have to win on Tuesday.

"I don't think anybody will see the Germany games as the deciders in the group, which is the only positive thing we can take. At the minute it is disappointing and we need to get over it quickly.

"It is everyone's responsibility to make sure we do a job on Tuesday and get six points out of three games."

On another night a goal against one of the best teams in the world would be something to celebrate, but Andy Keogh admitted that his late header "really doesn't matter".

Keogh watched most of the demolition from the bench before his introduction for Aiden McGeady on 69 minutes.

He dismissed any suggestions that the players have turned against manager Giovanni Trapattoni and his methods, and said the players will be fully focused on Tuesday as they chase second place in the group.

Keogh said: "I don't think anyone has turned against him. His record speaks for itself. We should have qualified for the World Cup [in 2010]. We qualified for the Euros. So I don't think there is any problem there.

"We got beaten by a better team all round. The lads are gutted but we just have to make sure we do the business on Tuesday.

"All games are important but the other games are more realistic for us and Germany showed tonight why they are ranked second in the world.

"They've thoroughly deserved their victory but the other games are more important for us to pick up points.

"Everyone is disappointed. We don't really need to say anything else. We move on to the next game."
