Donegal dominate football All-Star list

All-Ireland winners Donegal lead the way with eight players on the GAA GPA Football All-Star team for 2012.

The county's outstanding campaign sees them represented in every line of the field.

Beaten All-Ireland finalists Mayo occupy four places and there are also positions for Cork (2), and Dublin (1).

The hurling team and the Player of the Year in both football and hurling will be announced on Friday during a live broadcast on RTÉ One from the Convention Centre in Dublin. The programme starts at 7.00pm.

Goalkeeper: Paul Durcan (Donegal)

Full-backs: Neil McGee (Donegal), Ger Cafferkey (Mayo), Keith Higgins (Mayo) Half-back line: Lee Keegan (Mayo), Karl Lacey (Donegal), Frank McGlynn (Donegal)

Midfield: Neil Gallagher, Aidan Walsh

Half-forward line: Paul Flynn (Dublin), Alan Dillon (Mayo), Mark McHugh (Donegal) Full-forward line: Colm O'Neill (Cork), Michael Murphy (Donegal), Colm McFadden (Donegal)

Goalkeeper: Paul Durkan

The Four Masters clubman was a commanding presence throughout the season and his crucial save late on against Tyrone in the Ulster semi-final was a defining moment in Donegal's march to glory.

FULL-BACK LINE:

Neil McGee

It's a second All-Star for McGee after a year in which he was a rock in Donegal's last line of defence.

Ger Cafferkey

This tight-marking defender deservedly picks up his first award.

Keith Higgins

A player with an abundance of pace that stood tall when Dublin rallied in the second half of the All-Ireland semi-final.

HALF-BACK LINE:

Lee Keegan

As expected, the Westport player picks up his first All-Star. Recovered well to take his place in the All-Ireland final after a nasty finger injury picked up in the semi.

Karl Lacey

It is no surprise that the Four Masters player picks up his fourth award. Equally adept at making surging runs and at providing the killer pass to the forwards.

Frank McGlynn

One of the nailed on certainties for an award – the Glenfin clubman delivered consistently strong performances throughout the season. His display in the Ulster final was the most eye catching.

MIDFIELD:

Neil Gallagher

After nine seasons in the Donegal jersey, the Glenswilly clubman finally gets due recognition after a dominant showing in the midfield sector.

Aidan Walsh:

It's a second All-Star for the Kanturk native in a year which Cork ultimately fell short at the semi-final stage.

HALF-FORWARD LINE:

Paul Flynn

Dublin's only representative on the side had a productive season when many of those around him failed to reach the heights of 2011.

Alan Dillon

No surprise that the Ballintubber player picks up his second award. Was seen to telling effect when Mayo had the Dubs on the back foot for the first 50 minutes of the All-Ireland semi-final.

Mark McHugh

One of the most versatile players to grace the modern day game. He easily could have been honoured as a defender.

FULL-FORWARD LINE

Colm O'Neill

Cork's second player on this year's XV picks up his first All-Star. A consistent score-getter all year in the aftermath of a cruciate knee ligament injury that threatened to limit his effectiveness.

Michael Murphy

His man-of-the-match performance in the All-Ireland final was one of the highlights of the year – typified by his early goal that nearly burst the net. Contributes a lot of hard graft to the Donegal cause and at only 23 you fell that his best days are ahead of him.

Colm McFadden

After ten years playing senior inter-county football for Donegal, 2012 was a seminal year for the Creeslough native. Got many vital scores in the seven-game march to the title, including crucial goals against Kerry and Mayo.
