Eamon Dunphy believes the FAI make a mistake when deciding to keep Giovanni Trapattoni as Republic of Ireland manager.
The RTÉ soccer analyst made the claim after last night's meeting of the association board where they opted not to remove the 73-year-old from his position, despite the 6-1 World Cup qualifier defeat against Germany last Friday in Dublin.
Trapattoni will continue his four-and-a-half-year reign in the wake of Tuesday's 4-1 victory in the Faroe Islands.
Dunphy told RTÉ: "I'm not entirely surprised. I think if the premise is that he will change then that is a mistake. He will not change.
"This may prove to be a very costly mistake. But money enters the equation because the price of settling his contract and Marco Tardelli's contract would have been very expensive.
"I have no doubt that is a consideration. There is a case to be made for Trapattoni. It was made very powerfully by Liam Brady on Tuesday night. There is a case against him as well and they have obviously decided on balance that the case for keeping him is the more powerful."

Dunphy repeated reasons why he doubts the Italian's ability to lead Ireland to World Cup 2014 and while he feels Trapattoni's tenure has had high points, he stated the weight of argument against him is telling.
"The two principle arguments against him are he does go to matches in England and therefore is not familiar with the players.
"You cannot do this job unless you are attending matches and you are very familiar with the players.
"The second argument is that he keeps falling out with players, particularly the gifted younger players. There is also another very important argument; the style of play is primitive. I think John Giles described it as caveman football.
"The argument for him is that he has qualified for the European Championship finals. We have only lost twice in qualifying matches under his leadership but on balance I would be against him and I think this is a mistake."
