Derry set for FAI Cup celebration

The victorious Derry City squad will arrive home this evening with the FAI Cup after yesterday's dramatic 3-2 extra time victory over St Patrick's Athletic in the Aviva Stadium.

The squad are due at the Everglades Hotel on the outskirts of the City at 5:30pm and will leave there at 6:30pm in an open top bus for a reception at the Guild Hall Square at 7pm.

Derry manager Declan Devine told RTÉ this morning: "It is huge for our city. We have been through our down times in terms of economic climate and it is important we have a feel good factor about our city.

"We are a football city and to take this trophy back today means a lot to a lot of people. We've had supporters that have travelled all over Ireland this year. It is fantastic on behalf of the players and staff to reward them by bringing the trophy home."

Devine has led City to two cup finals this year after defeat to Crusaders in the Setanta Cup decider and they finished fifth in the league despite a season dogged by injuries.

He is hopeful of adding to yesterday's win: "We had six players under the age of 21 playing yesterday as well. The sky is the limit for these young players.

"We hope that we can move on, we hope we can continue to build. I've said all along that if we can get our full squad we're a match for anybody."
