Evans on verge of Roscommon role

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 08 November 2012 | 23.06

John Evans will be ratified as the new manager of Roscommon at a county board meeting tonight.

Evans will take over from Des Newton who resigned after their exit from this year's All-Ireland Football Championship.

The Rossies were humiliated by Galway in the Connacht Championship but achieved a noteable win over Armagh in the qualifiers before eventually being convincingly beaten by Tyrone in round two.

Evans quit his role with Tipperary last March but during his tenure he took the Premier men from Division 4 to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League before dropping back to Division 3.

He also managed the county's under-21 footballers to a first ever Munster title in 2010.

Seamus McEnaney had been linked to the role but Evans' appointment will be confirmed tonight.

He faces a tough task in 2013 in Connacht where Roscommon will face the winners of Galway or Mayo in the semi-finals.
