Henry Shefflin may be rested for the early part of Kilkenny's Allianz Hurling League campaign next spring.
In 2013, the Ballyhale Shamrock's player will bid for a record tenth All-Ireland title and management may feel that it's best for the 33-year-old to be fresh as the Cats eye September glory again.
On Sunday next, Shamrock's are favourites against Dicksboro in the Kilkenny county final, and are also fancied to land the ultimate club prize next March so keeping Shefflin in the thick of the action.
For the last two seasons, injury prevented Shefflin from participating in the league and the player is willing to see how things develop before plans for next year are finalised.
He told the Irish Independent: "Management will have a say in where I will figure. A lot will depend on where you finish with your club and that. Late on in your career, you have to take all those things into consideration."
Kilkenny's bid for another hat-trick of All-Ireland titles begins with a Leinster quarter-final clash against Offaly in early June.
