Weld bidding for third Melbourne Cup with Choice

Dermot Weld has two Melbourne Cups to his credit, with Vintage Crop in 1993 and Media Puzzle 10 years ago, and is optimistic of a big run from Galileo's Choice tomorrow morning.

"He had a problem with transit fever when he first arrived but he as able to be treated and got over it very quickly," the Irish trainer said.

"He has improved every week he's been here and I'm delighted with the horse.

"He is a very talented galloper."

French trainer Mikel Delzangles, fresh from saddling Flotilla to victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf at Santa Anita on Friday, is delighted with the well-being of last year's winner Dunaden.

"If he can get the same sort of run he had last year he will be in the finish," he said.

"I'm confident that he has improved from the Caulfield Cup."

Ryan Moore believes he could have a triumphant first ride in the Emirates Melbourne Cup when he teams up with Mount Athos for Luca Cumani at Flemington on Tuesday.

The Newmarket handler has gone close in the past with the likes of Bauer and Purple Moon, and Moore is convinced Mount Athos has the ideal profile.

"I know what I have to do and in Mount Athos, I have a horse that I wouldn't swap for any other," he told www.betfair.com.

"He stays well, as a Chester Cup fourth and a Cesarewitch fourth underlines, but to win this race you need a horse with a turn of foot. And Mount Athos certainly has that.

"Luca knows what it takes to prepare a horse for this race, and Mount Athos comes here with excellent credentials after showing himself a much improved horse after joining his stable at the start of the season, with this race very much in mind.

"He was very impressive in winning at York two starts ago, travelling well and quickening up like a good horse, and then took the step up to Group company in his stride when winning at Newbury last time.

"That was the first time I rode him and I was suitably impressed. Now, the form of that race hasn't worked out at all well but he won it with ease and gave me the feel of a high-class horse.

"The draw in eight is fine, and I have a good racing weight. As a well-handicapped, improving horse, proven on good and fast ground, I have every right to be hopeful.

"But this is undoubtedly one of the best Melbourne Cups I have seen in a long time, and the European horses look set to dominate."

Ed Dunlop is hoping Red Cadeaux can make up his agonising defeat by Dunaden 12 months ago.

"I'm nought for three with Dunaden, we're better weighted this time, can we turn the tables? We'll give it a go," the Newmarket trainer told www.edunlop.com

"The horse seems in very good form.

"We have planned this - I hope I have done my job correctly.

"He is bigger and stronger this time, we are very happy with him.

"He runs very well fresh and he looks fantastic. My team have done a great job.

"He is a horse that has proven he runs well first time out, but this is a tough race and we need a little luck.

"Maybe it will be our turn."
