Kilbane announces retirement from football

Republic of Ireland defender Kevin Kilbane has announced his retirement from the game.

The popular and versatile player made 110 appearances for the Boys in Green, and is the third most-capped player behind Shay Given and Robbie Keane.

Kilbane, 35, enjoyed a varied club career encompassing 614 games. He started off with Preston before moving to West Brom. He joined Sunderland in 1999 and also made over 100 appearances for Everton.

He also had spells with Wigan, Hull, Huddersfield and Derby, and most recently was employed with League One side Coventry City.

Kilbane was affectionately dubbed 'Zinedine Kilbane' by Irish fans after a memorable midfield performance for Ireland in Paris in a World Cup qualifier in 2004.

"I would like to thank the directors, coaching staff, players and supporters at Coventry City Football Club for my brief time at the club and wish them all the best for the future," Kilbane said on the Coventry website.
