RTÉ Head of Sport Ryle Nugent is looking forward to a celebration of a "fantastic" sporting year at the RTÉ Sports Awards tonight.
The ceremony will be live on television and online (Island of Ireland), starting at 9.30pm on RTÉ One and will feature main awards: Team of the Year, Manager of the Year and Sports Person of the Year.
The RTÉ/Irish Sports Council's Hall of Fame Award will also be presented, with a very special Irish sporting legend set to be honoured.
Commenting on the 12 months just past, Nugent said: "It's been a fantastic year with drama and excitement a plenty for Irish athletes and teams across a pantheon of events both domestically and internationally.
"We've had a hectic and truly memorable year on all our services bringing the audience events and performances from around the country and around the world."
The awards have changed this year with the winner of the RTÉ Sports Team of the Year set to be selected by the public via phone and text vote on the night for the first time.
Details of how to vote will be revealed at the beginning of the show at 9.30pm and throughout the broadcast.
The RTÉ Sport Manager of the Year will be selected by a panel of representatives from 18 national newspapers and broadcasters.
The RTÉ Sports Person of the Year will be selected by a panel of RTÉ Sport journalists and editorial staff.
Nugent added: "We decided to make some changes this year and the focus of the programme is to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Irish teams and individuals both at home and abroad. It's a difficult task to reflect so much in two hours but I hope the viewers will enjoy what we've come up with.
"This year we've attempted to be more inclusive in the manner by which the awards are decided. The public will decide on the team of the year - a fantastic line up to choose from.
"In addition, the various newspaper editors and heads of sport from national radio and television stations have voted for the manger of the year. It brings a variety of views and opinions to the process."
Stars will be present for broadcast
Many of the stars who made 2012 such a memorable year in Irish sport will present for the live broadcast of the ceremony.
Nugent added: "We're delighted that so many of the biggest stars of Irish sport in 2012 have agreed to attend. It's not an easy task to find a date that can accommodate such a significant group. I genuinely appreciate the effort that many of them are making to attend on the night so close to Christmas.
"I'm looking forward to celebrating the best of the best and recalling once again the great moments of 2012."
RTÉ broadcaster Darragh Maloney will host the ceremony and expects plenty of highlights over the course of the two-hour programme.
Olympic and Paralympic achievement
Inevitably, the achievements of Irish Olympians and Paralympians will be a major focus on the night.
Maloney said: "It really has been an incredible year for sport in this country. Where do you start when you are looking back at the last 12 months? The Olympic Games jump out at you and the performance of the boxing team with Katie winning gold and John Joe, Michael and Paddy winning their medals.
"They were special days but the Paralympic Games were special too from an Irish perspective and we had our most successful Paralympics in modern history with the likes of Jason Smyth, Michael McKillop and Mark Rohan starring for Ireland in London."
Domestic sport also threw up some magic moments, with the football and hurling championships providing plenty of drama.
"Donegal and Kilkenny followers will remember 2012 with great fondness too. Donegal winning their first All-Ireland Football crown in 20 years and Kilkenny winning yet another hurling title after a great battle with Galway. Karl Lacey and Henry Shefflin, with his nine All-Ireland medals, are both nominated for the RTÉ Sports Person of the Year Award."
"Right across the board, it has been another stellar year for sport in this country."
Opportunity for sports fans to relive best of 2012
The focus of the show is on bringing the big stories of 2012 to life and with most of the nominees set to be present on the night, the show represents a unique opportunity to relive some incredible moments.
Maloney added: "I am really looking forward to chatting to everyone on the night. I always enjoy being around elite sportspeople and hearing their stories and that is what Sunday is all about. Their stories will bring back some great memories."
But the host will just as surprised as anyone else as each recipient is revealed as he has no advance knowledge of the Award winners.
"I suppose I am dying to know who has won what. It will be a busy two hours and after a lot of preparation, I just can't wait for the show to start!"
The RTÉ Sports Awards are live at 9.30pm on RTE One and online.
