Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald believes John Mullane will find it hard to resist a return to inter-county hurling with Waterford.
Waterford man Mullane announced his retirement last month, but former Deise boss Fitzgerald believes he could yet reverse that decision.
"From what I've heard John is adamant he won't be back, but never say never because this guy loves hurling," Fitzgerald said in the Irish Examiner.
"He never might have had the passion early in the year but I can tell you one thing that fella would be itching to get out here."
Clare meet Waterford in the Munster quarter-final in June and Fitzgerald just hopes he doesn't return before then.
He continued: "Would I like to see it? Feck it, maybe not against Clare I wouldn't like to see it! But you will miss this guy around. He has flair and the game needs passion and flair.
"John Mullane still has something to offer. I just love his enthusiasm. We don't want to have boring characters out there, we want characters who wear their hearts on their sleeves.
"It means something to him to play for Waterford and we need those guys."
