Curran: All-Ireland win a reward for years of work

St Brigid's goalkeeper Shane Curran was full praise for the collective efforts put in by its members over the years following their All-Ireland victory over Ballymun Kichams at Croke Park.

Frankie Dolan's last-gasp point saw the Roscommon side prevail on a 2-11 to 2-10 scoreline giving them a first club success.

Curran, who is known locally as "Cake", is a few weeks shy of his 42nd birthday, but that stat on a birth certificate does not curb his ambition.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport, he said: "Whatever age you are doesn't make any difference. Playing with this group of players makes me feel 13 – they have giving so much energy and that has impacted on the whole squad.

"We are now the most magnificent men to have left Roscommon since 1944 and we're going back with a senior All-Ireland medal. That's a lot to be proud of."

There are many, according to Curran, who can take satisfaction in the St Patrick's Day victory. He added: "The win was just desserts for a lot of the hard work the club has put in over the last 20 years.

"They were players not involved in the current squad who were part of the journey and they also deserve credit. I have to take my hat off to the management team of Kevin (McStay), Liam (McHale) and Benny (O'Brien).

"I always felt I could play a part and Kevin convinced me of that after he asked me to get involved again. The club made a great appointment in getting him and he's put together a great backroom team.

Even down those who make the tea it has been a magnificent effort."
