Martyn Irvine has crashed out of his first race since winning the world scratch race championships, falling approximately 50km into today's stage of the Tour of Taiwan.
The 27-year-old professional has been taken to hospital with a suspected fractured hip, and will undergo tests.
It is uncertain how long he will be sidelined, but Irvine will hope to return as soon as possible.
He is in the first year of a professional contract with the American UnitedHealthcare team and had a good racing programme laid out for him.
He had been due to go to the United States after the Tour of Taiwan and race there for several weeks, but those plans will now be changed.
Irvine became the first Irishman to win a track cycling World Championship in over a century in February when he triumphed in the scratch race in Minsk, Belarus.
