Barry-Murphy: Relegation not the end of the world

Cork manager Jimmy Barry-Murphy says relegation from Division 1A is not the "end of the world" after defeat to Clare yesterday.

The Rebels relinquished their Allianz Hurling League top-tier status after an extra-time 0-31 to 2-23 loss to Clare in the Gaelic Grounds.

Pa Cronin put the Leesiders ahead with a goal two minutes from time but Davy Fitzgerald's men hit back to force additional time and surged to victory to avoid relegation.

Speaking after the game, Barry-Murphy told RTÉ Sport: "We are disappointed. We got a goal to put us ahead with five of six minutes left and I felt we would hold on then.

"We didn't play that badly but, in fairness, Clare had more chances than us and if they had lost they would have been very disappointed.

"But it certainly isn't the end of the world. We didn't want to go down, we'd like to stay in Division 1(A) because of the competition in the games there is excellent but we just have to get on with it now."

Asked if there were any positives to be taken from the game, he replied: "Not a lot, being relegated isn't very nice but that's life. You've got to get on with it. It happens to teams all the time and we're no different to anyone else from that point of view."
