Elusive Kate resisted the challenge of odds-on favourite Sky Lantern to claim Group One honours in the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.
Richard Hannon's 1000 Guineas heroine Sky Lantern blitzed her rivals in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and was a 4-7 market leader taking on her elders for the first time over the straight mile on the July course.
Dual Group One winner Elusive Kate, narrowly beaten by the reopposing Giofra in this race 12 months ago, was a 3-1 shot after an encouraging comeback fourth against the colts in Royal Ascot's Queen Anne Stakes.
William Buick quickly steered Elusive Kate to the front for this clash of the generations, with Richard Hughes never too far away aboard Sky Lantern.
Buick kicked for home well over a furlong out and hanging left under pressure, Elusive Kate gradually carried Sky Lantern across the track.
The favourite did her best to get on terms, but the John Gosden-trained Elusive Kate was always doing enough and held on by a neck.
Defending champion Giofra was ultimately well held in third, ahead of the only other runner, Purr Along.
