Kilkenny look to recover after 'draining occasion'

Henry Shefflin says Kilkenny will need to recover quickly ahead of next weekend's qualifier showdown with Waterford.

The All-Ireland champions face the Déise in Thurles on Saturday (7pm) in what will be their fourth game in four weeks.

Shefflin, who made a dramatic return to action after an eight-month lay-off in their win over Tipparary, told RTÉ Sport: "It's up to the management team to get the recoveries right, it's going to be a big test for the lads.

"It was a very draining occasion, mentally and emotionally, for all the players.

"They need to get their feet back on the ground. We've a massive match again next Saturday night. That's the thing with the qualifiers, they come thick and fast. We're thrilled to be there and we look forward to it."

The nine-time Liam MacCarthy winner also revealed he didn't know if he would get a run against the Premier County, having been out of action since sustaining a foot injury while playing for his club, Ballyhale Shamrocks, in December.

"I didn't know if I was going to be coming in or not," said the 34-year-old who played the last five minutes of the game in Nowlan Park.

"Just to get back on the field, put on the helmet, put on the boots and get a jersey was special occasion.

It's been a long eight months but it's great that Kilkenny won first and foremost and that's the most pleasing aspect."

The Kilkenny v Waterford clash will be the second game of a doubleheader in Thurles next Saturday.

In the opening game at Semple Stadium, Clare will face Wexford. Throw-in for that game will be 5pm.
