Taylor into last four at EU Championships

Katie Taylor has advanced to the semi-finals of the European Union Championships in Keszthely, Hungary.

The Bray woman, who is now assured of at least bronze, stopped Hungary's Benke Sara – who took standing counts in the second and third – in the fourth round at Helikon Hotel venue.

Taylor, who is aiming for her fifth EU lightweight title on the trot in Keszthely, will now meet Mira Potkonen of Finland or Bulgaria's Svetlana Stavena in the last-four on Friday.

Meanwhile, Dervla Duffy lost out at the quarter-final stage to France's Delphine Mancini in the senior bantamweight class.

Duffy can consider herself very unfortunate to be going out at the last-eight stage as she was on top for most of this fight only to be on the wrong end of a split decision in favour of Mancini.

EU Youth Championships
Earlier today, there were contrasting semi-final fortunes for Belfast youths Kristina O'Hara and Christine Gargan at the championships.

O'Hara gave an exhibition of boxing to guarantee Ireland a first silver medal, at least, of the tournament with a unanimous decision over Italy's Stephanie Silva amid the heat and humidity of the Helikon Hotel.

The Irish champion dominated the bout from the opening bell and will now meet either Holland's Tanaceina Balentien or Turkey's Ayse Cagirir in the light flyweight final at the weekend.

Gargan lost out to Wassily Lkhadiri of France in the bantamweight class. The 2011 European junior silver medallist left absolutely everything in the ring, but had to settle for bronze after four tough rounds.

Cork's Christine Desmond will be taking home bronze from Keszthely. The five-time Irish champion produced another brave performance but was beaten by Germany's Carlata Hansen in the welterweight class this afternoon.
