Canning certain Hawk-Eye 'will not slip up again'

Galway's Joe Canning has defended Hawk-Eye technology despite the controversy following Sunday's All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship semi-final.

Limerick were denied a point in the early stages of the clash with the Tribesmen following a referral to what turned out to be a malfunctioning system.

The game ended all square after 60 minutes, with Galway going on to progress in extra-time. But there are now calls for a replay due to the mistake.

Canning is confident redemption can be found in future use of the technology.

He told RTÉ Sport, "I'm sure they will not slip up again. It was human error more so than the Hawk-Eye.

"It wasn't the technology's fault in a way, because someone obviously programmed it to do that. You would have to look at the technichan more so than the Hawk-Eye.

"It is very hard for Limerick obviously to take when a point was disallowed and it was a point. You can see where they are coming from. If it has to be played, Galway will turn up and play the match.

"There are lots of decisions made in the match that you wouldn't feel 100% with. You could look at the last free with Galway as well, it was in the second or third minute of injury-time and Galway could launch an appeal against that. You will get nowhere obviously.

"That is just the way it is. If it has to be replayed I'm sure Galway will replay it. It is tough to take from a Limerick perspective."

Canning was speaking ahead of Galway's Bord Gais Energy Hurling Under-21 Championship semi-final with Clare as the possibility of double success at under-age level remains alive.

"It has happened before in years gone past. Hopefully the guys will do the business in the coming weeks," he concluded.
