Fiona Doyle has secured a second semi-final spot at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona following an Irish record swim in the heats of the 50m Breaststroke.
Doyle, who swam the 100m Breaststroke semi-final earlier in the week finishing 11th, put in the performance of her life to finish third in her heat in a time of 30.93.
Ranked 10th going into the event, she took almost half a second off her previous best time of 31.35 to rank ninth going into this afternoon's semi-final which take place at 5:26pm.
Doyle now holds Irish records in the 50m, 100m and 200m Breaststroke.
Clearly delighted with her performance, 21-year-old Doyle said: "I'm really, really happy.
"I'm delighted to be under 31 seconds and to set a new Irish record was fantastic. I'm very excited for the semi-final let's see what happens and hopefully I can make the final."
Russia's Yulia Efimova, who beat Doyle to gold in the 100m Breaststroke final at the World University Games in Russia, was this morning's fastest qualifier from the 50m Breaststroke in a new world record time of 29.78.
The top eight qualifiers from this afternoon's semi-final will progress to the final tomorrow.
Nicholas Quinn was the only Irish swimmer in finals action at the US Open in California yesterday. Quinn, swimming in the 100m Breaststroke B final, bettered his time from the morning heats to finish third in the final and 11th overall in a time of 1:02.80.
