Keane and Scully into IPC world swimming finals

Ellen Keane (S9 50m freestyle and SM9 200m individual medley) and James Scully (S5 200m freestyle) will both compete in their respective finals on day two of the IPC World Swimming Championships in Montreal.

Keane was the first Irish swimmer in action in Montreal today following a fantastic night for Ireland on Monday where Darragh McDonald won S6 400m freestyle gold and Bethany Firth secured S14 200m freestyle silver.

Continuing the good team form, Keane booked her spot in both the S9 50m freestyle and SM9 200m individual medley finals.

Eighteen-year-old Ellen finished third in her heat of the 50m freestyle in a time of 31.58, just outside her personal best, placing her eighth overall.

Just one hour later she was back in the pool for the 200m individual medley heats where she finished third in the heat in 2:47.26 and will progress to the final ranked sixth.

Speaking after the 200m IM, Keane said: "The heat swim for the Medley felt nice and relaxed and controlled, swimming in the last heat I knew I could do whatever pace I needed to just as long as I got into the final, so I have saved all of my energy for the final tonight."

James Scully got his first taste of World Championship action in the heats of the S5 200m freestyle.

Scully, from Meath, was second in his heat in a time of 3:00.17 and goes into tonight's final in the bronze-medal position.

And according to Scully there's more in the tank, he told the press: "I'm happy with the result overall, the time's a bit slow, there's things I need to work on, it didn't feel 100%, but I've a lot more to give in the final".

Brazil's Daniel Dias, Paralympic and world champion across six events, was the fastest qualifier in Scully's event in a time of 2:35.64.

Keane will swim in tonight's 50m free final at 2214 and the 200m IM final at 0020, while Scully will go in his event's decider at 2218. Keane.
