Tyrone rally to see of Roscommon challenge

Tyrone came from behind with a storming finish to defeat Roscommon by 1-12 to 0-13 in the All-Ireland MFC semi-final at Croke Park.

Diarmuid McGann had a penalty saved by Sean Fox, but his three points helped the Rossies to a 0-06 to 0-03 lead.

Conor McKenna's 39th-minute goal brought Tyrone level, but Roscommon went back in front through Ronan Daly and Diarmuid Murtagh.

It was McKenna who inspired the Red Hand revival with two superb points to set up a meeting with Mayo in the decider.

Roscommon missed a fourth minute penalty as Diarmuid McGann was denied brilliantly by Sean Fox's save after Rhys Quinn had been penalised for hauling down Diarmuid Murtagh.

But the resultant 45 was worked to Murtagh, who split the posts to ease the Rossies into a 0-2 to 0-1 lead.

McGann tapped over a free as the high fielding Cathal Compton kept the Connacht lads on the attack and with Sean Mullooly performing with stoic efficiency at full back, they frustrated the Ulster side's attack.

Conor McKenna narrowed the gap from a 45, and added a gem off the outside of his right boot, which was only awarded following the intervention of Hawk-Eye.

McGann thumped over a terrific free and Henry Walsh steered over a gem from wide on the right as Fergal O'Donnell's side got back on top.

Roscommon were well worth their 0-6 to 0-3 interval lead and stretched the advantage through wing back Ronan Daly.

Full back Mullooly executed a superb tackle on McKenna as Tyrone attempted to get some attacking momentum and having gone more than 20 minutes without a score, the Red Hands suddenly sprang to life.

Lee Brennan clipped over a point and McKenna smashed home a brilliant 39th-minute goal to bring them level.

But Roscommon responded with a volley of scores that quickly restored their three-point advantage with Murtagh, Daly and Ultan Harney all on target.

Tyrone displayed their courage and mettle in the final 10 minutes, dispensing with the sweeper system to pile on the pressure and McKenna rose to the challenge with two inspirational scores.

Tiarnan Donnelly and Christopher Morris also hit the target as they outscored their opponents by five points to one in the closing stages to book their place in the decider.
