Alternative hurling league proposal put forward

No decision was reached at the GAA's Ard Chomhairle meeting today regarding future structures of Allianz Hurling leagues.

The delegates were due to vote on a proposal to increase the number of teams in Division 1A from six to eight, a move which would have seen relegated Cork and 1B play-off losers Limerick play in the top flight next season.

However, an alternative proposal was put forward that would see two groups of six 'graded' teams.

All teams in each group would play each other plus two teams from the same grade in the other group.

This would guarantee each team seven games in the regular season.

The top two teams from each group qualify for semi-finals, while the bottom team from each group play a relegation play-off.

The proposal was made by the National Fixtures Planning Committee and each county will now discuss the document before any decision is made.

Meanwhile, it has been agreed to stage All-Ireland hurling final replays on Saturdays following the success of the Clare v Cork replay.
