McComb and Moylette both win in Kazakhstan

Ireland's Sean McComb and Ray Mollett have both progressed to the last 32 at the Elite World Amateur Championships in Kazakhstan.

McComb claimed a comfortable victory over Almog Briga of Israel in the lightweight division.

The Holy Trinity fighter was rarely troubled and was awarded a unanimous decision over his opponent.

Moylette was up next at the 100-nation tournament for Ireland, but had to work hard to overcome the challenge of Greece's Alexandros Tsanikidis.

Moylette got the nod over Tsanikidis in their light welterweight encounter but it was on a split 2-1 decision.

The Mayo-man was rocked early on by a powerful right hook from Tsanikidis but after a shaky start, he recovered enough to claim victory.

Aftewards Moylette admitted it wasn't his best ever display, but was pleased to progress. "To be honest, it wasn't a great performance from me but I was in there to get a job done and I got the job done.

"Not everything is going to go your way. It's the biggest stage in boxing and you have to take what you get. I was a bit asleep in the first round, the second round I had to up it and maybe I wasn't as cool as I should be, I just went to war a bit.

"It's not one of the prettiest wins but at the end of a day, a win is a win and we've something to build on."

Yesterday Tommy McCarthy beat Nikolay Mutavski via a unanimous decision to get Ireland off to a winning start at the Championships.

Adam Nolan is in action for Ireland on Wednesday.
