Following a spate of recent high-profile retirements, there was further bad news for Cork football today as Ciarán Sheehan signed a two-year contract with AFL side Carlton Blues.
The announcement comes in the wake of five other 2010 All-Ireland winners, Pearse O'Neill, Graham Canty, Paudie Kissane, Noel O'Leary and Alan Quirke, all hanging up their boots in the last three weeks.
Sheehan, who scored a point in the 2010 All-Ireland final win over Down, trained with the Blues in 2009 but did not sign with the Melbourne club.
The 22-year-old Éire Óg clubman, who played in the recent International Rules series against Australia, has now decided that the time is right to make the switch.
Zac Tuohy of Laois and Ciaran Byrne of Louth are also on the books at Carlton.
