Former Antrim captain Finnegan reveals MND battle

Former Antrim football captain Anto Finnegan has revealed that he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year.

The Belfast native was diagnosed with the condition in August 2012 but has only now made the decision to go public in the hope of raising awareness of the disease.

Finnegan, 40, played with the Saffrons from 1994 to 2005.

The St Paul's clubman has set up a trust called deterMND, which is due to hold a series of fundraising events in the coming months.

He is hoping to help organise a GAA match at Ravenhill, the home of Ulster Rugby, as part of fundraising efforts to raise awareness of the deadly disease.

"How you respond to those hard knocks will define you as a person"

He told RTÉ Sport: "Life isn't a bed of roses for anyone, there are hard knocks in life. I guess how you respond to those hard knocks will define you as a person.

"I played my playing career in a certain manner. I enjoyed the physical challenge, I enjoyed the skill, I enjoyed being on the ball, I enjoyed tackling for the ball, I enjoyed the friendship and the camaraderie of the sport. This is a very different battle now that I have.

"I will absolutely fight, I have a number of personal goals that I want to achieve. I have family goals that I want to achieve and as long as I continue adding to those I will continue to fight. I don't know any other way."
