Horgan is new Drogheda United boss

Drogheda United have appointed Robbie Horgan, Mick Cooke's former assistant, as their new manager.

Cooke led Drogheda to the Setanta Sports Cup, EA Sports Cup and FAI Cup finals this year but lost all three and the club announced in September that they would not be renewing his contract, citing conflicting long-term plans.

A statement said former Drogs, Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne goalkeeper Horgan had impressed them with "his vision and plans for the club, and his commitment to nurturing young talent combined with his proven work rate and professionalism "

"His strong financial understanding and his ambition and strength of character made him the right man for the job at this time," said director Noel Heeney .

"We believe he will prove to be an exceptional manager".

"I am delighted that the members of the selection panel were so enthusiastic about my vision for the club and have put their faith in me," said Horgan.

"I am 100% committed to bringing the club forward to challenge at the highest level."
