Delap announces his retirement

Former Republic of Ireland international Rory Delap has announced his retirement from soccer.

The 37-year-old, who made 11 appearances for Ireland, has called time on his career after struggling to recover from a torn hamstring.

Delap spent time with Southampton, Derby, Sunderland and Barnsley but it was with Stoke City where he enjoyed the brightest spell of his career.

The midfielder joined Stoke in 2006, helping them to win promotion to the Premier League and his long throw-ins were a crucial weapon for the Potters.

Signing a one-year contract with League Two side Burton Albion in the summer, Delap had hoped to prolong his player career but injuries and time have caught up with him.

Burton manager Gary Rowett said: "Rory has been a constant professional since he joined the club in the summer.

"His attitude and work ethic have been a credit to himself and the invaluable knowledge and experience that he has passed onto the rest of the players here at Burton Albion has been priceless."

He added: "He has had a fantastic career and we are honoured here at Burton that he has finished his career with us."
