Kenny calls time on Cork career

Cork two time All-Ireland winner Tom Kenny has announced his decision to retire from inter-county hurling.

Kenny, who won the Liam McCarthy Cup with Cork in 2004 and 2005 informed manager Jimmy Barry Murphy of his intention to step down in order to focus on his club career with Grenagh.

"I met Jimmy (Barry-Murphy) a couple of nights ago and told him," Kenny told the Irish Examiner.

"I said all along I'd wait until Grenagh were finished in the championship, and our season ended last Sunday when we won the intermediate football."

"I'm 32 now and I felt it was time to let other lads come through and have their chance. I'm healthy, it's not because of injury."

Kenny was part of the Cork team to lose this year's All-Ireland final replay with Clare and while he admits that he would have liked to go out on a high, he insists he has no regrets.

"I've had a good innings with Cork, it would have been great to go out with a third All-Ireland medal this year, but it wasn't to be," he insisted.

Kenny went on to pay tribute to those who had supported him during his time with the Rebels "Over the years my mother and father and extended family were very good to me always, and my wife, Norleen, has been hugely supportive.

"All the lads I played alongside for Cork... It was an honour," he added.
