England's Ian White edged out a battling Kim Huybrechts in a dramatic second-round match in the PDC World Darts Championship at London's Alexandra Palace.
Stoke thrower White raced to a 3-0 set advantage but his Belgian opponent hit back to level the match at 3-3 and force a decider.
The 43-year-old Englishman held his nerve, however, in the face of the 28-year-old Hurricane and did not blow his chance as he hit back in the final set to win 4-3.
After claiming a 3-0 lead, White took the first leg in the fourth set after a miss from his opponent, but Huybrechts moved 2-1 ahead to throw for the set.
White then missed the chance to level it up when he narrowly missed the bull, with Huybrechts taking the double he needed with one dart to take the sets score to 3-1.
The momentum of the match had shifted, but a 180 from White - the 13th of the match - stopped the rot and he halted a four-leg losing streak to go 1-1 in the fifth.
However, the Belgian, who defeated his brother Ronny in the first round, edged ahead again but White pegged him back to set up a last-leg shootout, which Huybrechts snatched to go 3-2 down.
Set six went to two legs apiece and Huybrechts levelled the match at three sets all to force a decider.
The two players matched each other with White then breaking throw to move 2-1 ahead and throw for the match.
The veteran, who is nicknamed the Diamond, showed his mental strength to battle through and halt a resurgent Huybrechts to claim an impressive win.
In the earlier games, Richie Burnett beat fifth seed Andy Hamilton 4-1 in the first match of the night before Scotland's Andy Thornton whitewashed Beau Anderson 4-0.
The Scot only lost two legs in the match in what was a dominant and comfortable performance which saw him throw seven maximums.
