Queiroz: Fergie should go to games

Former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz does not believe Alex Ferguson should stop going to watch games at Old Trafford, calling suggestions it would help current incumbent David Moyes 'pure fantasy'.

Ferguson retired last summer following 26-years at the helm, in which time he collected no less than 13 Premier League titles as well as two Champions League and five FA Cup successes.

He was replaced by Moyes but the Scot has struggled to seamlessly integrate his own ideas on to the current champions, who sit seventh in the table having halted a run of three defeats in all competitions with a 2-0 win at home to Swansea on Saturday.

Ferguson, who is now a director at United, has been at most matches so far this campaign but was absent for the recent victory.

Current Iran head coach Queiroz, who won eight trophies during two spells as Ferguson's assistant, does not feel having the former manager in attendance makes a difference to results and reckons Ferguson will always want to be on hand to witness any further success United achieve.

"What do you expect? That Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't watch the games? That is pure, pure fantasy," he told BBC's Sportsweek programme.

"Do you expect that Sir Bobby Charlton doesn't see Manchester United or Carlos Queiroz doesn't see Manchester United? We love the club, we should be there all the time.

"I hope that, given good health, he will be there for years and years to see the club he has been building for his entire life - the club he loves.

"I'm sure all the coaches, the manager and players love to see him in the stands."

Queiroz, who has also had spells in charge of Real Madrid and Portugal, admitted Ferguson would not be happy with recent form but has backed Moyes to turn things around sooner rather than later.

"Of course he [Ferguson] is not happy," said Queiroz.

"But I'm sure he knows better than any other person in the world what happens in that kind of situation. He knows that time, confidence and trust will put the team on the right track.

"Nobody in this football world is happy or satisfied when the team is not winning or the results are not according to the expectations.

"That is the present situation, the fans, David and the players are not happy. I know how much the players have a strong wish and determination to come back and I'm sure in a short period of time they will find the right track and it is just a matter of time.

"It is my strong belief, because I know the club and it is very strong, when the board make a decision they trust the people they chose. And I'm sure with the qualities and experience David has, plus the wonderful work he did at Everton and the support of the entire board, soon the results will come out and everything will be all right."
