Rainbow: O'Brien will lift Carlow players

Carlow manager Anthony Rainbow believes rugby international Sean O'Brien's presence in the county set-up will be uplifting for his players.

The Leinster and Ireland player has joined the Carlow unit, having been ruled out for the next number of months with a dislocated shoulder.

Rainbow revealed they have not yet decided on a role for the Tullow man.

He told RTÉ: "Sean came in for the first time on Wednesday night when we were playing Athlone IT. He was at the game last Sunday and he expressed an interest.

"On the Monday he gave us a call and said 'I'm out for a couple of months and I'd love to get involved in the team' in any way he can.

"We have yet to sit down to see exactly what his role is but his presence alone in the dressing-room was uplifting to the players and it is great to have a person of his calibre involved with Carlow GAA.

"He is an inspirational figure in Carlow and if the players can get something out of it, it is all the better."

Carlow were beaten by Kildare on Sunday in the O'Byrne Cup.

The sides were tied at 0-05 apiece at half-time until a strong Kildare finish saw them emerge with a 1-11 to 0-08 victory in Newbridge.

Rainbow is hopeful of seeing an improvement in his side prior to the start of the Allianz Football League.

The manager said: "We worked a lot harder today than we did over the last two games. I was happy with that aspect. We worked hard for the 70 minutes.

"When I look back at last Wednesday and Sunday, we only worked in patches. Today was right to the end and there was a lot more intensity to the game which I was happy with.

"We made one or two mistakes in the last 10 minutes that let Kildare in for the goal and one or two points. Again it is down to a small bit of tiredness and fatigue that one would have set in the last 10 minutes. That is something we are going to work on over the next two or three weeks.

"Our fitness levels are not as good as I'd probably like them to be but we have two or three weeks before the first round of the league to work on it."
