Ribery: I deserved to win Ballon d'Or

Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery has claimed that he should have won the Ballon d'Or World Player of the Year award rather than Cristiano Ronaldo.

The French playmaker said "politics" were the reason he came third in the voting behind Real Madrid's Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

"I have won everything with the team and individually," said Ribery, who played a key role as Bayern secured a clean sweep of Champions League, Bundesliga, German Cup, European Super Cup and Club World Cup in 2013.

"Ronaldo won nothing. I'm not sad, but it hurts the heart.

"Don't get me wrong, I am proud to have been there. I feel I deserved this title. There is so much politics.

Ribery also claimed that that the FIFA Team of the Year was biased towards the Spanish giants.

"When I see the top eleven that was chosen... there are only 3 Bayern players (Ribery, Manuel Neuer and Philipp Lahm) there.

"This is madness. (Thomas) Muller must be there, (David) Alaba, (Bastian) Schweinsteiger, (Arjen) Robben.

"We won five titles, made history. Who has done that before?

"I'm sure, if Barcelona and Madrid stood in the Champions League final, the team would consist only of players of Real and Barca."

Meanwhile, Ribery and international team-mate Karim Benzema go on trial in Paris today charged with having sex with an underage prostitute, who later gained fame as a lingerie model and designer.
