Dynaste finishes strongly to win Ryanair Chase

Dynaste justified favouritism as he came with a power-packed finish to win the Grade One Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham.

Beaten into second at the Festival last year, David Pipe's charge flew up the run in to claim a clear-cut success in the hands of Tom Scudamore.

The front-running Hidden Cyclone kept on for second while Rajdhani Express posted a career-best effort in finishing third.

Kauto Stone set the early pace with Scudamore content to sit in the pack and adopt waiting tactics while Hidden Cyclone was also prominent, settled on the heels of Benefficient in third.

Andrew McNamara was first to kick, assuming the lead three fences from home with Rajdhani Express following him through.

That pair were still in control coming down to the last but Dynaste was really starting to motor and he jumped the final fence in great style before accelerating away to win by two and a quarter lengths.

Rajdhani Express was the same distance back in third.

Al Ferof was staying on at the one pace at the finish and Benefficient was pulled up sharply before the last.

Scudamore said: "He's taken some knocks so I'm pleased for the horse as he's gone and shown how good he is, and he's gone and shown it at Cheltenham in a Grade One.

"I'm delighted for the owners and for David because they've done a lot of hard work. He just wasn't himself after the King George, but that was the real him today. What a thrill.

"I wasn't really going well early on, but the further I've gone the better he's gone. When they are very good you have to confidence that they'll get you back into contention."

Pipe said: "It's great, we came here last year as a good thing but finished second to Benefficient.

"Tom is riding great, you're only as good as the horses you sit on though and it's the same for trainers.

"If he came back to his Betfair run he had to have a chance and he was working nicely at home

"We were confident but you have to be cautious at the same time.

"The more we switch him off, the further he'll get.

"We'll have a chat, he went to Aintree last year and won or there's Punchestown to consider as well. I expect he'll go somewhere."

Shark Hanlon said of the runner-up: "I seem to find one to beat me every time.

"He's run a great race, but just like the last day when Sire De Grugy beat us we've found one to beat us.

"Andrew (McNamara) said just as he came up to the last he had a look around at the crowd and it's the difference between winning and losing.

"I'm gutted. He's been second in three Grade Ones now. He just seems to find one too good but he's a great horse.

"Everyone keeps telling me he's a two-miler but on this ground he doesn't have enough toe for that. He's off to the field now, but hopefully there's a big day in him."
