Galway claim vital win against Tipp

Galway produced purposeful performance to claim a crucial Allianz Hurling League 3-16 to 1-19 win at Pearse Stadium.

The Tribesmen ruled the opening period and Anthony Cunningham's team bagged three goals as they went 3-08 to 0-09 ahead at the break.

Majors from Niall Healy, Conor Cooney (penalty), and the influential Jonathan Glynn ensured Galway were firmly in command.

Iarla Tannian was sent off for a second bookable offence late on for Galway, but even though Seamus Callanan scored a last gasp goal for Tipperary Anthony Cunningham's side held on.

The stakes were piled high for Galway, who were completely aware that a positive result needed to be posted if avoiding a relegation play/off was what they intended to do. Unsurprisingly the westerners were particularly busy during a first half in which they worked diligently to net three goals.

Tipperary weren't operating with the same intensity as Galway's forward line were causing Tipperary plenty of bother.

Keen to make an impression early on, Galway, with Niall Healy effective, led by 0-06 to 0-02 by the 12th minute. Healy (3), Cooney, David Burke, and Padraig Brehony all found the range for the Tribesmen, who were very much in the groove.

Eamonn O'Shea's visitors' did improve for a stint with Noel McGrath and Seamus Callanan clipping some nice scores as the margin was reduced to 0-07 to 0-06.

Galway then pounced for a 20th minute goal following a sweet move involving Cooney, David Burke, and Brehony. The sliotar eventually found its way to Healy, who supplied a blistering finish which injected Galway's cause with hope and momentum.

John O'Dwyer and substitute Kieran Bergin replied with points for Tipperary before Galway scored a second goal.

Cooney blasted a penalty to the roof of the Tipperary net following a Paddy Stapleton foul on Glynn, who was a key figure for the maroons.

On the stroke of half-time Glynn's bustling run culminated with a third Galway goal that gave the Tribesmen an eight point cushion.

After the restart Galway maintained a high industry level with Brehony excelling at centrefield, while Cooney and David Burke impressed up front.

There was Tipperary resistance from Shane McGrath, who scored two points in quick succession, but Galway were never seriously troubled.

Seven minutes from the end Tannian was given his marching orders when picking up a second yellow card for a foul on Bergin. Callanan drilled home a 20 metre free to reduce the gap to three, but Galway survived an anxious finale to earn the spoils.
