Long hoping to feature with Hoolahan again

Shane Long is hoping Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill will think further about a partnership with Wes Hoolahan after a solid night for the duo at the Aviva Stadium.

Long and Hoolahan combined on several occasions as the former Cork City man scored Ireland's opener, and also squandered two glorious chances that could have altered the complexion of the game as Serbia left Dublin with a 2-1 victory.

Hoolahan was awarded man-of-the-match for his display and Long is hoping the pair get another opportunity to impress.

He told RTÉ Sport: "I thought I did a lot of good things tonight but sadly it will be remembered for my two misses. It was a great thing to play up front with Wes tonight.

"He likes setting up strikers, I enjoyed playing up front and running the lines and he would slot me through so hopefully next time I'll take those chances and give the manager something to think of.

"We played a good team tonight, they caused us a few problems on the pitch and I thought Wes was great in behind me. It's a formation for the manager to think about."

Hoolahan was winning only his tenth cap and at the age of 31 his hopes of becoming a starter for the qualification campaign are finally on the rise.

The combination with Long also appealed to the Norwich player.

He said: "Shane makes great runs and he always gets in those positions. Nine out of 10 times he would score them and tonight he was very unlucky. It was unfortunate he didn't get a hat-trick.

"You just have to take every game as it comes and every time you get the opportunity to impress you have to. Hopefully I did that tonight.

"It was good to get a run-out. We were unlucky, I thought we should have won because we had a lot of good chances. The start of the second-half killed us. The quality they have, they punished us."
