Cummins: Hard work in training paying off for Tipp

Tipperary's rejuvenation in the latter stages of the Allianz Hurling League has been the culmination of hard work on the training ground, according to former goalkeeper Brendan Cummins.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport, Cummins agreed that confidence within Tipperary had changed as a result of their wins against Dublin and Cork. The Premier County had struggled in the earlier stages of the league.

"As a group, when you're working, and just not really performing on the Sunday, you just rely on keeping on [with] Sunday work. And that's the message Eamon O'Shea had coming out from the camp, was that the team were training very well. I'd heard that the guys were moving well inside."

"Tipp have been conceding an awful lot. There's no good in hiding away from that" - Brendan Cummins

Cummins said that "the ante had been upped", and suggested it was the threat of relegation from Division 1A which had inspired them to victory against Dublin. He also highlighted Tipperary's scoring prowess in their win over Cork.

However, he admitted that the concession of 4-19 in last Sunday's thriller in Semple Stadium would be a concern for the Tipperary management team.

"Tipp have been conceding an awful lot," he said. "There's no good in hiding away from that. Eamon will have a lot to work on.

"[For instance] Tipp were totally dominant there in the second half, but a few mistakes here and there then, of course, let Cork back in."

Cummins said that Tipperary would be very happy to come away with the win considering the position they were in three weeks before.

Looking ahead to Tipperary's semi-final clash with Clare, Cummins suggested the Banner had had ideal preparation in their close-fought win after a fight against Laois.

"Davy [Fitzgerald] will feel it's been a good crash down to earth for his players," said Cummins. "He'd [have] been happy enough on the bus leaving Portlaoise on Sunday evening, that there'll be no-one getting too carried away going into the Tipp game now."
