Dundalk's Stephen O'Donnell will miss the remainder of the season having sustained serious knee injuries during last night's match with Shamrock Rovers.
Scans on Saturday morning have revealed that the club captain has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament following a collision wRovers' Shane Robinson in the 2-2 draw in Oriel Park.
Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny said: "Stephen has been an inspiring captain for us.
"He has been outstanding since his arrival at the club and I believe that his performances have elevated further this season. I believe he has been the best player in the league so far in 2014.
"He is devastated at the news and the thoughts of everybody at the club are with him.
"I'm sure Stephen has the strength of character to get through this difficult period."
