Munster flanker and captain Peter O'Mahony has undergone re-constructive shoulder surgery today, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
O'Mahony travelled to Dublin last night for a review with a specialist, and following the consultation it was confirmed that the Munster captain would require surgery on his left shoulder.
O'Mahony sustained the injury in the opening 20 minutes of Munster's 47-23 victory over Toulouse in the Heineken Cup on Saturday after he over-extended his shoulder, and was forced from the field of play.
South African CJ Stander is the player most likely to be selected in O'Mahony's place in the Munster side for their remaining Heineken Cup and Pro12 encounters.
The Irish province's next outing is against Glasgow in the Pro12 this Saturday evening. Their next Heineken Cup encounter is away against Toulon in Marseille on 27 April in the competition's semi-finals.
It is as yet unclear when O'Mahony will return to action, and whether he will be fit to travel on Ireland's end of season tour of Argentina, or indeed be fit for the start of the 2014/2015 season.
