McIlroy shines to lead Open by six

Two eagles in his final three holes ensured a battling Rory McIlroy will go into the final day of the Open Championship with a six-stroke lead after a third round 68.

McIlroy's lead had been threatened for a time by the challenge of Rickie Fowler, who himself shot 68, but the Irishman responded to the pressure by rattling off six threes in eight holes from the ninth to the 16th.

That eagle on 16 was followed by a fortunate bogey on the 17th, when it looked likely McIlroy would drop more than one shot, but McIlroy closed his round in spectacular fashion, a superb iron shot on the final hole setting him up for a putt he finished coolly.

Darren Clarke's impressive third round of 67 left him tied for 12th place on five under par, where he was joined by Graeme McDowell who shot 68.

Shane Lowry's third-round 70 left him on three under going into the final day.
