Wexford want quarter-finals switched to Croke Park

Wexford have called on the GAA to switch Sunday's All-Ireland hurling quarter-final double-bill to Croke Park from Semple Stadium due to huge demand for tickets in the county.

The Model County take on Munster finalists Limerick at 1400 followed by the meeting of Tipperary and Dublin at 1600.

However, following a successful campaign in which Wexford have beaten All-Ireland champions Clare, Antrim and Waterford, the county board say they have received 5,000 applications from clubs for their allocation of 2,000 stand tickets.

There are 22,000 seats overall but tickets went on general sale last week, before Wexford beat Waterford, meaning their fans have had less time to buy tickets.

In a letter to the Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC), published on the Wexford GAA website, county secretary Margaret Doyle explains the problem and says that ticket sales have been suspended until Wednesday afternoon.

She calls on more tickets to be made available or for the games to be switched to Croke Park.

Country musician Garth Brooks had originally been due to play at Croke Park this weekend before the cancellation of five concerts.

Semple Stadium, which has a capacity of 53,500 and is Ireland's second-largest stadium after Croke Park, has hosted the quarter-finals in recent years.

"This isn't a blame game or anything like that from Wexford. We're not getting into that," Wexford chairman Diarmuid Devereux told the Irish Independent.

"I'm sure there will be thousands of extra supporters there because of the clamour for tickets anyway. But there is an empty stadium up the road that can give everybody a seat who wants to buy a seat. If you want to buy a seat you can buy a seat in Croke Park for €30.

"I just don't understand the logic. Why make 20,000 people stand when there is no need for it. They're not patrons, they're customers."
