Limerick's Fiona Doyle has scored a notable success at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin by qualifying for the final of the 50-metre breaststroke on the penultimate day of competition in Berlin.
However, there was disappointment for 19-year-old Sycerika McMahon, a silver medallist in the event in Hungary two years ago, who missed out on a place in the top eight, despite qualifying fifth for the semi-finals this morning from the heats.
Doyle, swimming in the same heat as McMahon, finished fourth in her semi-final in 31.30 seconds, which placed the 22-year-old sixth overall and put her safely into tomorrow's final (shortly after 3pm, Irish time).
McMahon had looked a nailed-on certainty after the heats where she actually swam a faster time than that medal-winning performance of two years ago in Hungary, recording a personal best time of 31.02 seconds.
However the Portaferry swimmer never got involved at the head of affairs in the semi-final and finished a disappointing sixth in 31.50 seconds, which placed her in 11th place and out of the final.
Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte, the gold-medal favourite and world champion, was the fastest qualifier in 29.88 seconds.
Earlier this morning, McMahon produced a personal best in the heats of the women's 200m Butterfly in 2:13.75, which placed the Texas A&M-based swimmer 19th, three places shy of making the semi-final.
Tallaght's Dan Sweeney finished off his week with a personal best in the men's 50-metres freestyle to finish 55th overall in a time of 24.07 seconds.
