Doyle seventh in European 50m breaststroke final

Limerick's Fiona Doyle finished seventh in the final of the women's 50m breaststroke on the last day of competition at the European Swimming championships in Berlin.

Having qualified in sixth place after Saturday's semi-finals, the University of Calgary-based Doyle started the race in lane seven and after a decent start was fourth passing the 25m to go mark.

However, the Irish swimmer couldn't sustain the momentum in the second half of the race and had to be content with seventh in a time of 31.37 seconds, .07 of a second slower than her semi-final swim.

The gold medal was won by the Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte, the world record holder in a time of 29.89 seconds, with silver going to Jennie Johansson of Sweden and Moniek Nijhuis of the Netherlands taking the bronze medal.

It was the first time that 22-year-old Doyle had reached a major international final after indifferent swims during the week-long meet in the German capital.

Doyle is only one of a handful of Irish swimmers to make a European long course final after Gary O'Toole, Michelle Smith de Bruin, Grainne Murphy and Sycerika McMahon.
