McMahon makes medley semi-final in Berlin

Sycerika McMahon has progressed to the semi-finals of the 200m individual medley at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin.

McMahon finished fourth in the final heat in a time of two minutes 15.46 seconds to progress to this evening's semi-finals (5.35pm Irish time).

Hungary's Katinka Hosszu, who clocked the fastest time of the session, was more than four seconds quicker than McMahon as the Portaferry swimmer finished 13th overall.

McMahon was disappointed with her 17th place finish in yesterday's 100m breaststroke, however, the 19-year-old will be hopeful that making the semi-finals will get her championships back on track.

Speaking after today's race she said: "It was a hard enough race for me this morning, it wasn't as fast as I was looking for obviously but I get a second swim tonight, and that's what it's all about."

On her chances in tonight's semi-final, she added: "I don't have a crystal ball but I know one thing for sure, I'm going out there to do my best and I will try as a hard as I can and see what happens after that."

McMahon was one of four Irish swimmers in action this morning but Dan Sweeney, Nicholas Quinn and Brendan Hyland all failed to make it out of their respective heats.

Hyland had been in action in two races so far in order to get ready for today's 200m butterfly, which is his main discipline, but the Tallaght swimmer's time of 2:00.34 was only good enough to place him 24th overall.

Sweeney and Quinn had both produced personal bests in the 100m breaststroke on Monday.

Sweeney was disqualified for an infringement after the first turn in his 200m breaststroke heat, but Quinn fared much better in the same event.

The Mayo man went came close to a semi-final berth, but his time of 2:14.82 left him 0.6 of a second off qualification.
