Meath's Kenny hangs up his boots

Seamus Kenny has called time on his 15-year inter-county career with Meath.

The Simonstown Gaels defender made his debut in 2001 and won the Leinster title that year and in 2010.

The 34-year-old was named captain in 2011 and 2012 but has suffered from serious injuries in recent years, including two cruciate ligament tears.

He was absent from Meath's All-Ireland qualifier defeat last weekend due to a hip injury.

"Age, time away from family and the way the body has responded over the last year are probably the main reasons I've decided to hang up the boots ," he told Newstalk.

"I went through a few years where I was able to get up a good run of form but the last couple of years, between cruciate knee ligament injuries and different things, have been frustrating.

"I made a decision that if I was going to go back [for one more year] that  I was going to give everything I could but I kept picking up injury after injury and never got a good run at it.

"That was the most frustrating thing, knowing that this was probably the last shot I had at it but I couldn't build up a head of steam."
