No progress for Irish swimmers

All four of Ireland's competitors failed to advance from their heats on the opening morning of the European Swimming Championships in Berlin.

Barry Murphy has been hoping to progress to the semi-finals stage of the 100m breaststroke as he prepares for his favoured 50m event later in the week, but the 28-year-old could only finish third at the Europa-Sportpark.

The Irish record holder was upstaged in his heat by compatriot Nicholas Quinn, who clocked a personal best of one minute 2.11 seconds as he filled the runner-up berth behind Israel's Yaron Shagalov.

Dan Sweeney claimed fourth in a lifetime best of 1:02.79.

Both Quinn and Sweeny will have been buoyed by their performances over distances short of their best as they target the 200m competition in the coming days.

Brendan Hyland finished seventh in the 50m butterfly but will be confident of a better performance in the 200m butterfly later in the week.

Hyland returns to the pool on Tuesday morning in the 200m freestyle, while Sycerika McMahon and Fiona Doyle will take to the water for the first time in heats of the 100m breaststroke.
