Report: Sexton to sign four-year Leinster deal

The Irish Independent has reported that Racing Métro out-half Jonathan Sexton has agreed a four-year deal with Leinster.

The Irish daily believes that the deal will be announced in the coming weeks as the contract for the Ireland and Lions No 10 is finalised.

The Dubliner has been the subject of further advances from Racing in recent weeks, who had offered him a four-year deal extension, as well as European and Top 14 champions Toulon entering the market for the 29-year-old.

Racing are believed to have offered Sexton €700,000 a season for four years, while Toulon are believed to have tabled a €900,000 a year bid for the former St Mary's clubman.

The reported IRFU deal would bring Sexton back to Leinster - the club he left in 2013 - until 2019, when he would turn 34.

The Indo says there was a triumvirate at the contract talks: Sexton himself, IRFU CEO Philip Browne and his Leinster counterpart Mick Dawson. One would also propose that Sexton's agent Fintan Drury was a key figure in brokering such a deal.

The wage which Sexton is to receive is undisclosed; however, with Jamie Heaslip on a groundbreaking €500,000 a year, three-year deal, the likelihood is that Sexton's deal will match or exceed this figure.

One of the breaking points in Sexton's contract talks in 2013 was that the IRFU refused to offer the out-half an equal wage to Heaslip's, who was rumoured at that time to be on €450,000 per season.

Given the difficulties in securing Sexton's services due to the demanding Top 14 fixture schedule last season, Ireland coach Joe Schmidt has repeatedly discussed his desire to have Sexton back in Ireland come the 2015/2016 season and if reports are true then he has got his man.
