Michael Conlan has progressed to the final of the Commonwealth Games after beating Wales' Sean McGoldrick in this afternoon's bantamweight semi-final in Glasgow.

The fight was stopped in the second round following an accidental clash of heads, which left a nasty gash on Conlan's forehead.

The ringside doctor took two looks at the cut and called off the fight as the blood seeped out and covered one side of the Belfast boxer's face.

Conlan started the fight in style, winning the opening round in a convincing manner, using his strong jab to keep the reigning champion at bay.

McGoldrick tried to draw the Belfast boxer into a scrap in the second round but Conlan remained composed, picking his shots and maintaining his jab from distance.

Then the clash of heads came after a tangle between the two boxers, with Conlan coming out the worse for wear but securing the bout in the process.

McGoldrick may feel he was unlucky to see the fight stopped, which prevented him from getting a chance to fight his way back into the contest.

Yet the early stoppage probably would not have made any difference as Conlan looked to have the measure of his opponent, switching styles from orthodox to southpaw at will as he outclassed the Welshman.

Conlan will face England's Qais Ashfaq in the final.

Earlier, Michaela Walsh has made it through to the gold medal fight at the Commonwealth Games after scoring a split-decision victory over Pinki Rani in Glasgow this afternoon.

Using her height and reach advantage, Walsh's jab proved very effective picking off her Indian opponent, who was swinging wildly but rarely connecting in the latter stages.

It was a slow start for Walsh, which probably led to the split decision with Rani edging the opening round, but the Holy Family fighter showed her class as the fight progressed and took the final two rounds, winning the contest 2:0 on a split decision.

Walsh will now face Olympic champion, England's Nicola Adams in Saturday's flyweight final.

Meanwhile, in the light welterweight semi-final, Sean Duffy was easily beaten by Junias Jonas as the Namibian outclassed the county Armagh boxer in all three rounds.

Sean McGlinchy also had to settle for a bronze medal, losing to New Zealand's David Nyika in the light heavyweight semi-final.
