Despite being stabbed up to nine times, Dublin footballer Jonny Cooper was lucky to escape a worse fate, according to his father.
The Na Fianna player was attacked in Dublin city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning and was taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment before being released.
Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Sean O'Rourke programme, Cooper's father, Brendan, said: "He went out with some of the lads after a football match. He got detached from some of his mates and decided to walk home.
"He got as far as Dorset Street and decided to have a bit of a rest, and out of nowhere this guy was standing over him demanding his wallet.
"It happened so fast and so much out of the blue it came as a complete shock.
"In the same breath as Jonny said 'no', the attack started. There was no discussion; there was no row or whatever. He literally just slashed him across the face.
"That was the initial interaction, and obviously he tried to protect himself at that stage by putting his hands over his head, and he got quite a number of stab wounds along the back of his neck.
"So it was frenzied in every sense of the word. It's saddening to think that these type of people are walking around the streets of Dublin.
"From what I can gather the doctors would say roughly around [nine stab wounds]. A lot of them were at the back of his neck because he went into a crouching position to try and protect himself as best he could.
"Bearing in mind that he was actually sitting down at the time and he didn't even have the opportunity to get away from his assailant. He took his wallet as calm as you like.
"A passing taxi driver [arrived] as the assailant was running off and very kindly he stopped and looked after Jonny by calling the ambulance, etc. We very much appreciate the action he took. It probably saved him from a worse fate."
"He's strong, he's young and there's every reason to believe he'll come through this" - Brendan Cooper
Cooper himself tweeted his thanks for all of the messages of support he received and his father says that he should make a full recovery.
"He's in very good spirits at the moment," he added. "He's over the worst of it at this stage. He's strong, he's young and there's every reason to believe he'll come through this.
"He's looking forward [to playing again]. He has a strong resolution about him and no doubt he'll be back in due course.
"It's one of these things when you are minding your own business. There was no interaction between Jonny and whoever attacked him. It was out of the blue. He never had a chance to run away or defend himself.
"This guy will do more damage unfortunately and that's the sad thing. Jonny was very, very lucky. Perhaps the next person won't be so lucky."
