Mayo chairman could face no-confidence vote

There is strengthening speculation in Mayo that their County Board chairman could face a vote of no confidence at tomorrow night's County Board meeting in Castlebar.

Paddy McNicholas is under pressure amid unhappiness within the County Executive at the process which led to the recommendation of Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly as the new Mayo football management team.

Already, cultural officer Gerry Bourke has resigned from the County Executive, claiming in the Mayo News that a meeting last Friday night was told that interviews were to be held for the position, only for an appointment to be made the following day without any interviews.

"I'm not happy with the way in which this whole scenario was handled. It was totally mishandled by the officers of the board," Bourke said.

"It's terrible for Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes, I have huge sympathy for them being dragged into this in the wrong way.

"Being appointed managers of Mayo should be a most joyful thing for them but the appointment has been tainted by how it has been handled through no fault of Pat's or Noel's.

"It appears the deal was done before the meeting." - Gerry Bourke

"I left the executive meeting on Friday night thinking it was one of the best meetings of the officer board I was ever at, only to discover the next day that the whole thing was a sham. It appears the deal was done before the meeting."

The contents of a press release from the County Board have also been questioned.

Liam McHale, who was due to be involved as part of an alternative management team under Kevin McStay, told Newstalk's Off the Ball programme that he would never again be involved with a Mayo team, such was his hurt at the way the process had been handled.
