Treve follows familiar Arc route at Longchamp

A new chapter begins with an old associate for Treve on Sunday as she makes her comeback under Thierry Jarnet in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp.

Twelve months ago in this race, Criquette Head-Maarek's filly looked unbeatable when winning for the only time in her career under Frankie Dettori, who was injured for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and allowed Jarnet to return to the plate and guide her to that memorable success.

Dettori is the retained rider for Al Shaqab Racing, and the pair were narrowly beaten by Cirrus Des Aigles in the Prix Ganay before her third-place finish in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot.

At the start of this week it was announced that Head-Maarek had asked for Jarnet to have the ride, as he does much of the work on her at home.

Harry Herbert, the owners' racing advisor, said: "I'm a huge Treve fan. You only have to look at the Prince of Wales's Stakes when she was running on three legs. That is not an excuse, she was very wrong.

"She was very sore in her back and did not run her race. That is how brilliant she is, she was only beaten a couple of lengths that day.

"But she looks amazing now. She is physically blossoming and, like a lot of fillies, this is the time of year when they start to blossom and she is coming to the fore.

"Criquette has warned everyone that the Vermeille is not the Arc, so she may be slightly short of fitness on Sunday. Whatever she does, she will come on for that run.

"She's in very good shape. She is a very brilliant filly. I have no doubt she has trained on and can be a serious contender in the Arc."

John Gosden fields two of Treve's major rivals, and stable jockey William Buick has chosen Pomology over Sultanina. Although Sultanina won the Nassau Stakes, the unbeaten Pomology defeated her in the Lancashire Oaks.

The progressive Dolniya and Baltic Baroness are the most interesting other French-trained runners.

The key three-year-old Arc trial, the Prix Niel, sees Andre Fabre's surprise Grand Prix de Paris winner Gallante up against Elie Lellouche's Ectot and Aidan O'Brien's Adelaide.

And in the Prix Foy, for older horses, Fabre's Flintshire is joined by O'Brien and Al Shaqab's 2013 Derby winner Ruler Of The World plus Pascal Bary's Spiritjim, who was disqualified after being first past the post in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud due to a positive drugs test.

Richard Hannon should have a major bearing on the Prix du Moulin with both Queen Anne winner Toronado and the 2000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder lining up.

Charm Spirit beat another Hannon miler, Shifting Power, in the Prix Jean Prat and Freddy Head said: "He is very well, he's a very nice horse and he is improving all the time.

"I think he is a different horse right now to what he was at Newmarket (fifth in the Guineas). The going should be good and I think he could be hard to beat."

Master Carpenter won a Group Three at Chantilly in June and trainer Rod Millman said: "He's very well and they are watering the track so the ground should be safe enough for him to run.

"It's a very competitive Group One, but we couldn't be happier with him and we've got Christophe Soumillon who won on him at Chantilly. That should be an advantage, I think.

"He probably didn't quite get the trip over a mile and a quarter, but he still got some good prize money. I think he deserves his chance in a race like this. I just wish Mr Hannon wasn't running his two!"

High Jinx, who often runs well across the Channel, is the only British stayer in the Prix Gladiateur.

"People have questioned him a bit, but to be fair to him he was never right last year. He got too heavy and had a few little niggles," trainer James Fanshawe told At The Races.

"We gelded him in the winter and he's been really consistent this year.

"We've been avoiding firm ground with him. It was great to get him winning at Maisons-Laffitte and he's come out of the race really well. He deserves to win a decent race."

The Prix du Petit Couvert has drawn a handful of British raiders including David O'Meara's Move In Time, the Tony Carroll-trained Caspian Prince and David Brown's Wind Fire.

Rae Guest's Mirza dead-heated in the race last year and he tries again after narrowly missing out in the Beverley Bullet.

Owner John Deer will also have a representative in the race in the John Hammond-trained Penmaen winner of her last two starts but taking a steep hike in class.

Deer said: "She's a Pivotal filly out of a mare called Lady Grace and she's done very well so far, winning five races.

"She's going to run in the Group Three this weekend and I just found out she's been entered in the Prix de l'Abbaye.

"I won the Abbaye with Patavellian (2003) and not many people gave him a chance.

"I certainly wouldn't discount it (for Penmaen) as they always go a hell of a clip and she's the sort of filly who can sit back and come through as she has a hell of a turn of foot.

"It will be her first run in Group Three company this weekend, so we'll see how she goes."
