Delaney maintains FAI on course to get out of debt

FAI chief executive John Delaney maintains that the association can be out of debt by 2020 if they "choose".

Delegates at July's AGM were told that a debt write-down of €11.7 million had been secured, and that the association restructured their loans during the last financial year to reduce debt to just over €50m.

And speaking on RTÉ 2fm's Game On last night Delaney said that they can be debt-free by in the next six years.

He said: "We can be debt free by 2020. It's been written up and down 150 times, 150,000 times probably.

"Come 2020, the naming rights are back up for resale, the ten-year tickets, the corporate boxes are back up for resale. There is money we get from UEFA every four years of €3.5million-€4million one-off payments.

"If we qualify for major championships there's also a serious amount of money made so there's no doubt if we choose we can be out of debt of 2020.

"We've already reduced our debt with a bank write-down from €56m to €43.5m. We're fine."

"When you get the likes of Andorra at home it doesn't excite the public" - John Delaney

In a wide-ranging interview – which can be heard here – the CEO said he was confident that 2015 will see improved attendances at home games, adding to the association's coffers.

Recent home fixtures have been notable for poor attendances.

"We have a difficulty with some nights, some of the fixtures aren't attractive," he said.

"When you get the likes of Andorra at home it doesn't excite the public. There can be games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at home, which is very difficult for people outside of Dublin.

"We've got England, Scotland, Poland and Germany – those four games will sell out next year, beyond doubt, because they're big matches. And Germany sold out when we had them in the last qualifiers; Estonia sold out when we were at the play-off match.

"So there are games that do sell out because naturally they excite the public. But not every international match has excited the public in the way that it should."

Ireland face Gibraltar and Germany in the Euro qualifiers later this month looking to build on their victory over Georgia in the opening Group D match.
